10 animated series with unforgettable Brazilian dubbing

When watching certain productions, whether series or films, many people choose to use subtitles to hear the original language and voices. However, in animations, it is very common to prefer Brazilian dubbing, which is responsible for works that have become unforgettable.

National voices became known in series such as Dragon Ball Z, Rick and Morty, Naruto and Yu Yu Hakusho, also for the adaptation of slang and jokes, which provided memorable moments remembered to this day.

Due to the excellent work in animation, Brazilian dubbing is considered by viewers to be one of the best in the world, whether due to the performances, the distinctive timbre of voices or the creativity. Therefore, these works are seen as better than the original. See some examples below.

1 – Rick and Morty

The cartoon has a mix of science fiction jargon with nihilistic phrases, insults, social media memes and several words that come out in the form of a burp, and was very well adapted to our language.

The main family that lives the multidimensional adventures is voiced by aio César Oliveira and Ênio Vivona (Rick), Renan Alonso (Morty), Mariana Pozatto (Summer), Raquel Elaine and Claudia Victoria (Beth) and André Gaiani (Jerry). It can be watched on Max.

2 – One-Punch Man

The anime based on the manga by artist ONE knew how to take advantage of the regional location, using the colloquial pronunciation of words and featuring slang and insults typical of younger audiences, which is in line with the production's proposal.

In the story, humanity is terrorized by powerful alien monsters, and Saitama, a bored bald teenager, is responsible for defeating the threats with just one punch. The voice cast is formed by Yuri Chesman (Saitama), Michel Di Fiori (Genos), Flora Paulita (Tatsumaki), Carlos Campanile (Silver Fang) and Tatá Guarnieri (King), and can be seen on Netflix.

3 – Yu Yu Hakusho

This is perhaps one of the greatest examples of a successful adaptation that will always be fondly remembered by fans. The anime, which was popular among otakus born in the 1980s and 1990s, tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a student who becomes a spiritual detective after his untimely death.

The dubbing phenomenon is due to the many regional terms, such as “rapadura é doce, mas não é mole” and “ah, eu tô maluco”, which emerged with the creativity of the dubbing team who decided to add humorous dialogues to the series.

The cast includes Marco Ribeiro (Yusuke Urameshi), José Luiz Barbeito (Kuwabara), Christiano Torreão (Hiei) and Duda Ribeiro (Kurama). Unfortunately, the anime can only be watched in Japanese with English subtitles on Crunchyroll, however, fans can relive the humorous dub in the live action made by Netflix in 2023, available on the platform.

4 – Naruto

Before officially arriving in Brazil in 2011, Naruto was already being watched on the internet. When it finally arrived in the country, the anime received a dub that maintained the humor, drama and tension of the characters at the same level as the Japanese original.

The series stars Naruto Uzumaki (Úrsula Bezerra), a young boy who lives in a world ruled by ninja clans and dreams of becoming the next Hokage leader of his community. The voice cast also includes Tatiane Keplmair (Sakura), Robson Kumode (Sasuke) and Élcio Sodré (Kakashi). It is available on Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video and Max.

5 – The Fairly OddParents

The Nickelodeon series created by Butch Hardman stars Timmy Turner, a boy who has his wishes granted by the fairy godparent duo Cosmo (Guilherme Briggs) and Wanda (Nair Amorim). He relies on magical help to get rid of Professor Denzel Crocker (Alexandre Moreno) and his babysitter (Miriam Ficher).

Most of the series' humor comes from the over-the-top performances by Briggs, Moreno and Ficher as their characters, which are often affected and shrill.

Timmy had three voice actors in Brazil: Alexandre Drummond (1st to part of the 3rd season), Thiago Farias (3rd to 8th) and Luiz Sérgio Vieira (9th to 10th). It can be watched on Paramount+ and Netflix (only the 7th season).

6 – The Powerpuff Girls

The Cartoon Network animation was created by Craig McCracken, and is remembered to this day for mixing cuteness and violence in its episodes. The Brazilian dubbing of the characters Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, voiced respectively by Iara Riça, Christiane Monteiro and Luisa Palomanes, is also memorable.

The heroines were created in a laboratory by Professor Utonium (Mário Cardoso), and must use their powers to free the city of Townsville from the threat of villains, often iconic, such as the Crazy Monkey (Jorge Vasconcellos) and Him (Guilherme Briggs).

7 – Dragon Ball Z

The Dragon Ball anime has had many different seasons and arcs, but the dubbing remains the same, to the delight of fans. Wendel Bezerra, Vagner Fagundes, Alfredo Rollo, Luiz Antônio Lobue, Fábio Lucindo, Tânia Gaidarji and Raquel Marinho still continue to voice Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, Kuririn, Bulma and Chi Chi.

The characters accompany Goku on a series of adventures and battles to save the Earth from threats of great power. Much of the classic production created by Akira Toriyama is available on Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll.

8 – South Park

This is a good example of how Brazilian voice actors can swear in animation. Right at the beginning of each episode, there is a warning that “the characters in this show were dubbed very poorly”, and the absurd things that the children Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman and Kenny McCormick say are the most normal part of the city that gives the series its name.

In the United States, the quartet is voiced by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and in Brazil, there was a rotation of voices each season, which did not leave aside the comedic aspect. It can be watched on Paramount+ and on the series' official website.

9 – Adventure Time

This is another animation that combines the best of fantasy dialogues, with modern slang for young audiences and a pinch of double-meaning jokes. The story focuses on friends Finn and Jake, a boy and a dog with magical powers in a world full of surreal characters and situations.

The protagonists were voiced by Luciano Monteiro and Eduardo Borgerth in all seasons, which can be found on Max and Netflix.

10 – X-Men

The first exclusive X-Men series has left its mark on popular culture, so much so that it ended up getting a revival years after its conclusion. Part of its success in Brazil is due to its dubbing, which featured the voices of Isaac Bardavid (Wolverine), Isaac Schneider (Professor Xavier), José Santa Cruz (Magneto) and Jane Kelly (Storm). The quartet also dubbed the film. live action released in 2000.

The story is about Professor Charles Xavier, who trains mutants to prove to society that they are not a threat to the human race. However, he is challenged by conspiracies made by politicians and conservative leaders and a rival group led by Magneto. It is available on Disney+.
