78 Russian planes have been seized abroad and will no longer be returned to Russia, Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev said on Tuesday. Russian airlines lease relatively many aircraft abroad and the sanctions against Russia make it more difficult to use them.
515 of the approximately 1,300 aircraft used by Russian airlines are rented from foreign companies. In order to limit the loss, Russia has introduced a law that makes it possible for airlines to register their foreign aircraft in Russia.
In this way, the devices cannot be confiscated.

However, many airlines do not dare to register their aircraft in Russia, because they are afraid that they will put foreign relations at risk.
At the moment there are about eight hundred aircraft in the Russian aircraft register, but Minister Savelyev would not say how many of those planes have been leased.
Most Boeing and Airbus aircraft of Russian airlines are registered in Ireland or Bermuda.
Those two countries already announced last week that they would confiscate all aircraft used by Russian companies.
