The Ghostbusters franchise is, without a doubt, one of the most well-known and idolized among pop culture fans. With the resounding success of the film Caça-Fantasmas: Mais Além (2021), which also introduced this saga to a new audience, it is natural that games will start to appear that want to take advantage of this moment. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is one of them.

Ghostbusters

With a focus on multiplayer, the game lets you feel what it’s like to be a Ghostbuster. You, in a team of four players, need to put an end to the haunting that plagues places like a museum, an inn and even a brewery. The ghost is controlled by a fifth player, who will do anything to make you and your companions fail in this mission. Despite being multiplayer oriented, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed features a story that takes place after the events of the 2021 film and unfolds as you evolve as a Ghostbuster.
There are characters created exclusively for the game and also two old acquaintances of the fans: Raymond “Ray” Stantz and Winston Zeddemore, who were played by actors Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, who brought them to life in the movies, making this part of the experience more authentic.
The Ghostbusters HQ is full of objects and surprises (the famous easter eggs) that the most assiduous fans of the franchise will notice right away, such as the dancing toaster, the Ecto-1 car, or Egon’s collection of fungi and molds Spengler. You can even utilize the ghostly receptacle to empty your trap after completing a job. Ghostbusters
The gameplay of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is explained through a tutorial right when you start playing. From customizing your character, using the proton beam and ghost tracker, to the steps required to capture a ghost. By accepting a job, you, along with three other players (human or AI controlled), have a certain amount of time to destroy ghostly crevasses and capture the ghost that is haunting the place. The rifts, three in total, are needed for the ghost to reappear. By destroying them all, the ghost has no way to escape, allowing you to capture it once and for all and complete the quest. The player controlling the ghost has many tricks up their sleeves, being able to smear ghost hunters with goo, leaving them incapacitated for a period of time, sabotaging their proton packs when they are distracted, and even summoning ghost minions to attack. them. The player’s duty as a ghost is to haunt the place as soon as possible. He can do this by scaring people around and also by using his supernatural powers to make objects move on their own. In addition, he can walk through walls (not all, just those that are marked with a crack) and can hide by possessing objects, which also serves to more quickly recover his ghostly powers, necessary for him to use all his abilities. To slow down the quest location’s haunting speed, the ghost hunters need to calm the frightened people using a QTE minigame. The risk with this is that if you get it wrong, the person will be more afraid. When the haunt reaches maximum level, all ghostly crevasses disappear and the ghostbusting players get a few seconds to try to capture the ghostly player. If they fail, they lose the game. Although it’s a fully multiplayer game, there aren’t any types of microtransactions in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. All rewards are gained through the experience you earn by playing, capturing ghosts, ghosting, completing challenges, and finding collectibles, which level up your level and allow you to use new cosmetic accessories and upgrade your ghost hunting gear. . Still talking about ghosts, they also share this experience gained. The higher your level, the more ghosts you can use. In total, there are five ghosts currently available, with each of them having their pros and cons. They also have their own level, separate from the main one, which increases whenever you use them. While Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is fun if you play with friends or other people, it leaves a lot to be desired when you rely on the AI, which is very weak and almost never does what you expect. In addition, after a few hours of playing, you may find yourself getting tired due to the game’s proposal, which brings a lot of repetition since the objectives of the missions are always the same (capturing the ghosts), changing only the location and, after some time, the types of ghosts. The game also needs some polishing in some technical aspects. During my experience, I had crashes, I was stuck in the scenery without being able to move (I saw this happening with other players as well), and I frequently ran into a bug on PS5 that made the frame rate drop from 60 fps to 30 fps, only to return to normal after fully exiting the game and re-entering it. This bug would sometimes pop up after finishing a quest and it was quite annoying. We were also able to test Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed on PC, where the technical issues were even greater. I kind of expected this, as the game was made on the Unreal Engine 4 graphics engine, which tends to be problematic on PC due to the way it loads shaders. Without proper optimization, the result is a gagging fest when something new appears on screen. On the computer I also found a bug that made the voices of all characters disappear. Based on that, the overall experience was far more satisfying on the PS5 than it was on the PC. On the other hand, luckily the cross-play between the two platforms worked perfectly. Speaking of localization in Portuguese for subtitles and the interface, there are some small slips, such as the absence of characters like “Ç” and “Ô in certain words. In addition, I came across texts that were not translated, appearing in English instead of Portuguese. However, an update was released yesterday (13) that apparently fixed most of the translations (or even all) that were missing. Ghostbusters
Conclusion Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed manages to entertain thanks to its gameplay that works well, giving you the real feeling of being a ghostbuster. However, like most co-op games similar to it focused only on multiplayer, it gets boring after a short time, as the missions are extremely repetitive. There are also technical issues, but they will likely be resolved through updates. Overall, worth checking out if you’re a die-hard Ghostbusters fan, especially if you have friends to play with. pros + Solid gameplay that does its job well + Lots of visual and equipment customization options for ghost hunting + Several easter eggs from the movies + Zero microtransactions cons – Various bugs and technical issues, especially on PC – Some slips in the Portuguese translation – A bit too repetitive experience – AI of allied bots leaves something to be desired Grade 7.8/10.0
