Gabriel Medina ends fast at Margaret River

the surfer Gabriel Medina failed to show his best surfing in the first stages of the year on the WSL. Up to the stage of Margaret River, the three-time world champion had not even reached the quarterfinals. So, the time was for a change. Back in top form, he stringed together victories to claim the title in Australia. However, as detailed by “ge”the plan was ready before Medina landed in Oceania.

The Brazilian, in an interview with TV Globo before the season, he revealed one of his goals for the year 2023. One of them is wanting to win in Margaret River, since he has never won and he wanted to change that. In the interview, the surfer said: “I want to win at Margaret River”.

Such a goal did not leave Gabriel Medina’s mind even though the surfer was in the middle of a bad start to the season.

In Australian territory, the Brazilian managed to recover safety on his board and had a neat championship. In fact, in the final, he beat the American Griffin Colapinto and won the title, the 17th of his career.

Surfer said: “It’s pretty special to win here. It’s a stage where I’ve always had problems winning heats. I felt good for getting good waves and winning. I’m feeling better, feeling like I’m in my groove again. Griff and I always had good battles. I love competing against the guys and that’s why we’re here. It is a really difficult wave and I am happy with my evolution”.

Furthermore, Medina’s win at Margaret River ends a long winless streak for him. The last stage that the Brazilian had conquered had been in 2021, in Trestles, in the United States, when he won the Finals and won the third world championship. As detailed by “ge”, the Brazilian, even after being out for most of last season to be able to take care of his own mental health and a knee injury, still shows he has the strength to go after his fourth trophy on the circuit.
