The symptoms of lung cancer

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men, and now also the second most common in women. This is reported by the Foundation against Cancer: “This evolution is directly related to the number of women who smoke, a figure that has been increasing in our country for several years. It also remains a difficult to treat form of cancer, with a poor prognosis.”

Lung cancer often remains under the radar for a long time, because in the early stages it gives no or vague symptoms, such as fatigue or coughing. The diagnosis is usually only made in an advanced stage, but then there is little chance of recovery and in fact one can only do symptom control. Lung cancer is therefore the deadliest form of cancer in Belgium.

Lung cancer occurs when lung cells multiply uncontrollably and form a malignant tumor. The cancer can quickly spread to other cells. Smoking is the most important risk factor for lung cancer.

There are different types of lung cancer. In 80 percent of patients, the cause is non-small cell lung carcinoma. Small cell lung carcinoma is less common, but more aggressive. These two types grow and spread differently. The treatment and outlook also differ for both types.

What are the symptoms of lung cancer?

The symptoms of lung cancer depend on the size and location of the tumor. In the early stages, you may not experience any symptoms. That is why lung cancer is often only discovered when it has already spread.
Complaints often develop only in an advanced stage. And even then they are difficult to recognize, because they are very diverse and vague. They also fit in with other symptoms, such as flu or a cold.
The following symptoms may indicate lung cancer:
  • Fatigue
  • Poor appetite, weight loss
  • A persistent cough
  • Mucus in the lungs
  • Constant pain in the chest
  • Shortness of breath, sometimes with wheezing
  • Hoarseness without sore throat
  • Swallowing problems
  • Change in cough, possibly with bloody mucus
  • A frequently recurring pneumonia or bronchitis that does not resolve with antibiotics
  • A swelling in the neck or face
  • Back pain or pain in the shoulder area

If the symptoms persist for more than two weeks, go to the doctor. Also make an appointment as soon as you notice blood in your coughed up mucus. Your doctor will do further research to find out what is causing your symptoms.
