How can you give birth safely at home?

Who can give birth at home?

A home birth is perfectly possible and safe when you are healthy, the pregnancy is normal and the labor starts between the 37th and 42nd week of pregnancy. In some cases, however, it is not possible. For example:

  • in case of a multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets, etc.)
  • in case of complications from a previous pregnancy
  • if you suffer from high blood pressure
  • if the baby in your belly has growth retardation
  • in case of pre-eclampsia or pregnancy poisoning
  • in case of an anterior placenta
  • if you have gestational diabetes
  • in case of a breech presentation
  • if complications arise during labor. In such a case, a referral to the hospital is made.

Giving birth at home with an epidural is not possible.

First of all, you look for an independent midwife who can assist you during pregnancy and who can also lead the home birth in a good way. This can be done via the search function on the website of the Flemish Professional Organisation of Midwives.

Together with your midwife, all possible scenarios, including those in which something threatens to go wrong, are thoroughly discussed. Regular medical-obstetric follow-up by the gynaecologist or midwife who will supervise the delivery is therefore necessary.

During pregnancy, the parents must choose a hospital and a doctor in case transfer to a hospital is necessary. In addition, you also need a gynecologist, for follow-up by means of pregnancy ultrasounds.

In advance, during a prenatal consultation at home, the practical side is discussed: where and how you want to give birth, the lighting, heating, mattress protection and other necessities. For example, there must be hot water, the room in which you give birth must be able to be heated firmly and also be accessible with a stretcher for transfer to the hospital if necessary. During the consultation, you will also receive a list of materials with things that you must prepare yourself on the day of delivery, such as medication, towels, sheets, maternity pads and so on.

What is a home birth like?

When the contractions start, the midwife will come to your home. She has all the necessary medical equipment. Both what is needed during labor (doptone, blood pressure monitor, etc.) and the equipment needed during the delivery itself.

During labor, the midwife guides the woman and her partner through the process. She lets the woman go through her labor in peace and provides support where necessary. In between, she also takes obstetric parameters to see if everything is going well.

After the birth, the midwife provides initial care to mother and baby:

  • A vaginal tear or (rarely) an incision is sutured.
  • If necessary, administer medication to treat any incipient bleeding.
  • If necessary, administer oxygen to help the baby get a good start in life.

In case of doubt or a threatening complication, mother and baby can always be transferred to hospital.

Can you choose a water birth at home?

A water birth at home is possible after consultation with your midwife. You can purchase a special bath or pool for this.

How much does a home birth cost?

If your midwife is contracted, the home birth and 12 postnatal consultations are fully reimbursed by the health insurance fund. Mileage allowance and waiting allowance (for the midwife) are reimbursed by most hospitalisation insurances. If your midwife is not contracted, you can inquire with your health insurance fund about what is reimbursed and what is not.

Did you know that in some hospitals you can still give birth 'on your own' with your own midwife? This way you can bring your child into the world in peace and medical help is still nearby if necessary. Ask about the possibilities with your trusted midwife.
