Academy meets to discuss new measures to be taken against Will Smith

On Friday, April 8, members of the Academy will discuss what will be done after the scandal involving Will Smith and Chris Rock. The actor, who won the award in the category of “Best Actor” at this year’s edition, slapped the host of the ceremony after he made jokes about the shaved head of Smith’s wife, who suffers from a disease that causes hair loss. The annual meeting was postponed so that new measures can be taken regarding the case.

In a letter, Academy President David Rubin moved the meeting from April 18 to April 8.The earlier date was determined in accordance with California law and our standards of conduct to discuss Mr. Smith’s possible suspension or expulsion.”. Still in the letter, the president makes it clear that suspension and expulsion are no longer a possibility, since Smith has renounced his participation as a member of the academy.

On March 28, the Academy's Twitter profile spoke out about the incident, saying that “They do not tolerate violence” in reference to the assault committed by Smith towards the presenter of the awards. With administrative measures being sought by the organization responsible for the Oscars, the case is still reverberating on the internet, polarizing reactions about the incident. In response to the academy's tweet, an internet user points out that even after having assaulted Chris Rock, Smith won the statuette for “Best Actor” and that this was a clear demonstration of tolerance.

You watched and broadcast a live assault to millions of people around the world, then awarded a man who committed said assault immediately afterwards without removing him from the building or having him arrested for the crime.

That's the definition of condoning the violence.

At the moment, projects involving the actor are being suspended and he has checked into a rehabilitation clinic after having made an apology in a note published on his social networks. In a comment related to the suspension of projects by Netflix involving Will Smith, a profile on Twitter pointed out that they are putting the actor on a blacklist, pointing out the structural racism that leads to such a reaction and considering other cases of actors who committed aggression and had no consequences like Will.
