At 57 years old, Brooke Shields is the new cover of the international magazine “People” and told, for the first time, about the sexual abuse she suffered more than three decades ago by a powerful Hollywood executive. In her documentary “Pretty Baby”, which premieres on April 3rd on Hulu streaming in the United States, the actress tells the story and addresses her sexualized roles, including “Pretty Baby” (1978) in which her character was a child prostitute and “The Blue Lagoon” (1980).

Brooke was 20 years old when the attack happened, but she never told what happened or reported the attacker. “People didn't believe these stories back then. I thought I would never work again. It took me a long time to process this. I'm angrier now than I was then.“, said.

Without naming the attacker, the artist says she was invited to dinner by a Hollywood executive. “I thought I was getting a movie, a job”, said. To leave, he asked her to call a taxi from her hotel room. There, he committed the crime. “I didn't fight. I just froze”, remembered. Afterwards, she blamed herself. “I kept saying to myself, 'I shouldn't have done that. Why did I go up with him? I shouldn't have drunk at dinner.'“, he reported.

“It was very easy to disassociate back then and because it was a fight or flight choice. Fighting wasn't an option, so you just leave your body. 'You are not there. This did not happened.”, said Shields.

At the time, the actress told only one person about the abuse, her close friend and former security consultant, Gavin de Becker. “Brooke lived under the judgment of others for so long that it was painful to watch her judge herself”, he said.

“Making the documentary, you see it all together, and it's a miracle that I survived“, he stated. “Everyone processes their own trauma on a different timeline. I want to advocate that women can speak the truth” Shields said.
