Addictions and broken relationships – Addictions, broken relationships and difficult family ties. These seem to be the main themes in the five-part documentary about the life of André Hazes. Tonight the series premieres at The Tuschinski Royal Theatre in Amsterdam and from tomorrow the series can be seen on Videoland. What can we expect?

For fourteen months, the 28-year-old singer was followed by a camera crew to record his daily life. The documentary is about his previously denied alcohol and drug problems, but also about the death of his father and its influence on his relationship with his mother Rachel and sister Roxeanne.

Hazes did not tell about his addiction before and said that he struggled with burnout-like complaints. Various juice channels have been claiming for some time that there were indeed problems with drug use, but the singer kept denying it. With the announcement of new performances and the first trailers of the documentary, a clear turn has been made: now there is open talk about a drinking and drug addiction.

The result has become “quite melancholy”, documentary maker Cheeru Mampaey tells Veronica Superguide. “At the beginning of the first episode you already feel that something is not quite right. And you will also see a ‘point of no return’. From there he had to build back to where he is today. You get all the emotions.”

People get to know the singer better during the episodes, thinks the documentary maker. “For example, they don’t know how bad it was. And André himself also understands that certain things have not gone down well with the public, he really wants to put that right. I think if you’re still judging him after watching, maybe you should watch the series again. Because then you just haven’t understood him well,” says the director.

Last summer it was rumoured that a possible new engagement with his ex Monique Westenberg would be discussed in the documentary, partly because the two went on holiday together to the United States and Thailand. Westenberg later told in an interview with LINDA. that there is no question of reunification. In the past, the two were engaged: in December 2020 Hazes asked the mother of his son André to marry him. A few months later, they ended their relationship.

Sarah van Soelen, Hazes’ ex-girlfriend, was supposed to be seen in the documentary, but still refrained from doing so. Van Soelen has repeatedly objected to the use of images that have been shot. Van Soelen and her family worked on the docuserie when the 26-year-old influencer was still in a relationship with Hazes and the two had bought a house together. Now that the relationship is over, she has no need to see herself in the documentary.

Hazes has not yet given any interviews about the documentary series. Wednesday night during the premiere he will not speak to the press one-on-one and the first performances are not scheduled until 2023. The singer has not been on stage for more than a year. “I have overcome many addictions, but I will never lose the addiction to singing for my fans. I missed you so much and can’t wait to make my comeback.”
