After Bolsonaro vetoes the Paulo Gustavo Law, the comedian's mother criticizes the decision

In a post on her own Instagram account, Déa Lucia spoke out about the presidential attitude. In the published photo, an image of Paulo Gustavo appears next to an image of Jair Bolsonaro, where one can read “You will be banned!” about the president’s figure. In the caption of the photo, which has accumulated more than three thousand comments, the comedian’s mother wrote “What a joke, huh?”.

The image published is the mother's response to the presidential veto of PLP (Complementary Bill) 73/2021. The bill, known as the Paulo Gustavo Law, provided for the transfer of approximately R$3.86 billion to combat the consequences of Covid-19 in the cultural sector. The funds would be provided by federal funds to states and municipalities. The president's action caused repercussions among the comedian's family, as well as among politicians this Wednesday (6).

According to Bolsonaro, his veto is due to “contrary to the public interest”since the project forwards resources from the General Budget of the Union without making explicit the ways of reimbursing the money spent. Bolsonaro argued that allowing the benefit could impact public financial resources and “would incur a compression of discretionary spending, which is at critically low levels”.

Déa Lucia was not the only one to speak out about the case. Thales Breta, Paulo Gustavo's widower, commented on his Instagram: “How sad to see our country so politically disjointed, without knowing how to defend the interests of culture and the well-being of the people!”. According to the General Secretariat, the transfer of resources “would weaken the control, efficiency, management and transparency rules designed to audit federal resources and their execution”. The values ​​would come from the National Culture Fund (FNC) and would be expected to be operated directly by states and municipalities.
