Anna van der Breggen also opted out of the mixed team time trial at the World Cycling Championships in Flanders on Monday. The Dutchman has been struggling with her form for some time and for that reason also withdrew for the individual time trial, so she will not defend her title on Monday.

Riejanne Markus replaces Van der Breggen in the Dutch formation on Wednesday in the mixed team time trial, which also consists of Annemiek van Vleuten, Ellen van Dijk, Jos van Emden, Bauke Mollema and Koen Bouwman.

The 31-year-old Van der Breggen also signed out of the European Cycling Championships earlier this month, because she was struggling with a loss of form. “As I have ridden the past few days, I have nothing to look for at the European Championships,” she said of her cancellation at the time, after finishing 58th in the Spanish stage race Challenge by La Vuelta.

For the time being, Van der Breggen will participate in the road race, which will be held on Saturday. The road race is the last race in the impressive career of the Zwolle one, who became two-time world champion on the road and captured the Olympic title in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Last year she won gold in both the road race and the time trial in Imola, Italy.

Mixed team time trial is relatively new

The mixed team time trial is a relatively new part of the World Cycling Championships. The discipline was scheduled for the first time in 2019. Lucinda Brand, Markus, Amy Pieters, Mollema, Bouwman and Van Emden won a draw in gold. Last year the event was not held in Imola.

In the mixed team time trial, three men will first ride 22.5 kilometers from Knokke-Heist to Bruges. Then it’s the turn of three women. They’re doing 22 kilometers, with start and finish in Bruges. The event begins Wednesday at 1:45 p.m.

At the European Championships, the Netherlands took bronze in the mixed team time trial. Then the team consisted of Van Emden, Mollema, Bouwman, Demi Vollering, Pieters and Floortje Mackaij.
