Ajax needs to rapidly recuperate towards the Classic,
Ajax coach Erik ten Hag and his players do not fear that much more will go wrong in the final months of the season after the Champions League elimination.
On Sunday, the Amsterdam club is already waiting for the Classic against Feyenoord, while PSV is the opponent in the cup final on April 17.
“We have to take a bowl and grab a cup “, Dusan Tadic said in a characteristic way on Tuesday after the 0-1 defeat against Benfica in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. “That’s our belief.”
The 33-year-old Serb realizes that it will not be easy. The loss against Benfica in the eighth finals of the Champions League seems to have arrived hard, after Ajax had been in a class of its own in the group before the winter break.
Daley Blind called the end of the European adventure a “huge downer”. “And every player will have to process that in his own way,” said the Orange international. “I’m not worried about that. We still have a few days until the Classic and this group is mentally strong.”

‘It could be a nice finale’
Still, the loss against Benfica does not seem to be an incident. Ajax also lost to Go Ahead Eagles in recent weeks and escaped loss of points against RKC Waalwijk and SC Cambuur in the final phase.
Ten Hag would rather not speak of a lesser phase. He saw Ajax play excellently and dominate against Benfica. The trainer could hardly blame his team, he said.
“I said to the players immediately after the game: ‘If we keep reaching this level, it will be fine.’ That is not easy, we have to find the energy again. And learn from a few small mistakes. But we can do that. It can be a nice end to the season.”
The Classic between Ajax and Feyenoord in the Johan Cruijff ArenA starts on Sunday at 2.30 pm and is led by referee Danny Makkelie.
The team from Rotterdam will first play at home against FK Partizan in the eighth finals of the Conference League on Thursday.
