Alexei Navalny sentenced – Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was sentenced on Tuesday to nine years in prison for embezzlement of money from his own organizations. According to the court, he pushed back millions of euros from donors. The prosecutors had demanded thirteen years in prison against him.
Navalny was also found guilty on Tuesday of contempt of court in another case. Navalny says he is innocent and speaks of a political process. He is currently detained 90 kilometers from Moscow and could be transferred to Siberia. (Alexei Navalny sentenced )
In the judgment, the opposition leader is expressly sentenced to a prison sentence with a strict regime. That would make it more difficult to spread his opinion about, for example, the attack on Ukraine. Navalny has spoken out strongly against “Putin’s war in Ukraine” from the penal colony where he sits.

Russia is taking an increasingly tough line against the opposition in the country. For example, more and more names are being added to the list of terrorists and extremists, which also includes Navalny.
Because of the conviction, Putin will no longer have any resistance from his biggest political opponent in the coming years.
Navalny states that it is a political process and that he has done nothing wrong. According to his lawyer, he wants to appeal.
Navalny has been detained for more than a year
The 45-year-old opposition leader has been detained for more than a year on controversial charges from almost a decade ago and is accused of more and more criminal offenses.
The new trial was held in the penal colony east of Moscow where he is now serving a 2.5-year sentence.
He was sentenced a year ago for violating the terms of a previous conviction. Because of his stay in Germany, Navalny could not meet the conditions. He was in the hospital in that country after a poisoning that he blames the Kremlin for.
Now the opposition leader has been convicted of embezzling more than 4 million euros. These are donations made to his foundation that wanted to fight corruption and defend citizens’ rights. Alexei Navalny sentenced
But according to the court, Navalny would have used money for private expenses and for a campaign to become president.
Navalny could have been released in 2023 without the new conviction. He was also found guilty of embezzlement in 2014.
