American Idol is back for its historic 20th season. American reality television series in which aspiring singers competed for a recording contract and a shot at wealth and fame. The beloved reality competition series has been around for two decades now, and has seen a number of players rise to stardom in its years on both Fox and ABC.

This year, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie will return as judges with Ryan Seacrest as host. The only question that remains: who will be this year’s Idol?

“Luke, Katy, Lionel and Ryan are music and industry icons that have become synonymous with Idol on ABC,” said Rob Mills, executive vice president, Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment, Walt Disney Television. “Their star power is unmatched, and their support is a gift to our contestants that have deeply benefited from their wisdom over the past four seasons and they’re ready to do it again.

As we begin a momentous season, I think it’s safe to say this dream team has officially cemented their legacy on Idol.”

As excited as fans are to see American Idol vet Ryan Seacrest and judges Luke, Lionel and Katy, there is someone not coming back this season. According to Deadline, mentor Bobby Bones will not return to the singing competition this season. Bobby is leaving Idol due to scheduling conflicts with another show.

RECAPS

The American Idol format was imported from the United Kingdom, where Pop Idol, the creation of music and television executive Simon Fuller, aired. Both shows followed the same premise: judges travel throughout the country in search of its most-talented singer.

In the American version a series of auditions narrowed the candidates to a top few, who competed against each other on a studio set in Hollywood. Originally, contestants had to be between 16 and 24 years of age; the age rules were later modified, eventually allowing for performers aged 15 to 28.

The performers sang well-known pieces, which usually corresponded to a set theme that varied from week to week, and celebrity guests routinely made appearances on the show. In the contest’s final stages, the home audience rather than the panel of judges voted via telephone call, text message, or the show’s Web site and thereby decided the winner.

When and where will American Idol auditions for the 2022 season take place?

Like every year, American Idol searched all over the country to find top talent. But now, the auditions for season 5 are closed, which means you’ll have to wait until next year to try out. Remember, to be eligible for American Idol, you “must be born on or between June 2, 1992 and September 15, 2006.”
