Andrew Garfield Stars in Carl Sagan Biopic!

The American portal The Hollywood Reporter announced yesterday (5) the confirmation of the actors Andrew Garfield (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”) in the cast of the biopic of the scientist, astrophysicist and writer Carl Sagan.

The feature film, titled “Voyagers”will be directed by Sebastian Lelio (“A Fantastic Woman”) and will cover a romance with a space mission. Garfield and Edgar-Jones will play Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan.

“The film, set in 1977, will tell the story of when NASA prepared to launch humanity's first interstellar probes, the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions. Led by Carl Sagan (Andrew Garfield), the team sets out to create the Voyager Golden Record: phonograph records with images and sounds that show the diversity of Earth's life and cultures sent to any extraterrestrial life form (or distant future humans) that encounter them on the Earth space. But what begins as a race against time mission becomes an epic and unexpected love story between Sagan and collaborator Ann Druyan (Daisy Edgar-Jones).”

This isn't the first time Garfield and Edgar-Jones have worked together. The duo starred in the psychological drama true-crime miniseries “In the Name of Heaven”exclusive to the Star+ streaming platform. Their work yielded the first nomination for Andrew Garfield to the Emmy and the second indication of Daisy Edgar-Jones to the Golden Globe.

The biopic will be the director's second work in partnership with Netflix. Also directed by Lelio, the film “The Miracle” (2022) was nominated for the BAFTA of 2022 in the category “Best British Film”. The biopic's script was written and developed based on interviews with the director and the screenwriter. Jessica Goldberg with Ann Druyan and other people who worked on the project Golden Record. In a statement released by Lelio, he explains his interest in the feature film.

“As a nine-year-old boy growing up during Chile's dictatorship, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan's TV series “Cosmos” had a profound impact on me, igniting my fascination with life's biggest questions and mysteries.”said the director. “It's a dream to make a film about the Golden Record project and, within it, the inspiring love story between Carl and Ann. I'm thrilled that Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones will be at the center of this epic romance set against the infinite backdrop of space and time”he completed.

Carl Sagan was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, writer and activist. He became known for his work popularizing astronomy. He wrote more than 20 books and his most famous production, “Cosmos”was turned into a television series shown in more than 60 countries. Sagan was also an important supporter of the American space program and worked as a scientific advisor on several NASA missions.

With production of Ann Druyan in partnership with Ben Browning and Lynda Obst, “Voyagers” will be directed by Sebastian Leliowho also wrote the original screenplay alongside Jessica Goldberg. The rest of the cast has not yet been confirmed or announced. The film does not yet have a release date.
