Angela Bassett, Ramonda from “Black Panther”, is awarded an honorary Oscar

Last Wednesday night (9), actress Angela Bassett was awarded at the Governors Awards. The event took place at the Hollywood and Highland Center, in Los Angeles, and rewarded the American for her film career. In her speech, the actress made a point of mentioning each of the ten black women who have already received the coveted golden statuette and stated that she hopes that the film industry recognizes the work of other black artists in awards like this.

“My prayer is that we leave this industry more enriched, forward-thinking, and inclusive than we found it. At the end of the day, we all just want the opportunity to do good, meaningful work.”said Bassett.

Successful trajectory

Before being consecrated as “Queen Ramonda” in “Black Panther” (2018) and “Wakanda Forever” (2023), Angela Bassett had already been nominated for an Oscar for “Tina – The True Story of Tina Turner” (1994 ), biopic about singer Tina Turner, in the best actress category; and also as a supporting actress at the 2023 awards, for her role in the second film of Marvel's African hero. Also noteworthy is the actress' victory at the Golden Globes and nominations for the BAFTA and Emmy Awards for the same categories and productions already mentioned, with Bassett being one of the most awarded black actresses in Hollywood.

Governors Awards

The award ceremony that precedes the Oscar has been held since 2009 and celebrates the trajectory of successful artists who are part of the Hollywood production chain. This year, in addition to Bassett, there is also the statuette awarded to comedian Mel Brooks, aged 97, one of the oldest people to receive the honor.

Brooks, who started writing comedy programs in the 1950s, before finding success with productions such as “Squat in the West” and “Young Frankenstein”, was recognized for his career, which has spanned more than seven decades.
