Leiden: The basketball players of ZZ Leiden became champions of the Netherlands for the fourth time in club history on Thursday. The team of coach Geert Hammink also won the third game against Heroes Den Bosch in the final of the play-offs.

Leiden was too strong for sixteen-time champion Den Bosch in its own Vijf Meihal with 90-74 and was thus able to celebrate its first title since 2013. Then the South Hollanders did not lose a single game in the final battle of the play-offs, a so-called ‘sweep’.

ZZ Leiden, which also finished first in the regular competition, is the successor to Landstede from Zwolle, which claimed the title two years ago. Last season, the competition was not completed due to the corona pandemic.

The champion had this season with Emmanuel Nzekwesi the best player in the Dutch league. The 23-year-old resident of The Hague was voted the most valuable player (MVP) of the regular season in his first year as a professional.
