convicted Griner – Basketball players from Phoenix Mercury and Connecticut Sun were silent for 42 seconds on Thursday prior to their game because of the prison sentence that Brittney Griner was imposed in Russia.
Griner was sentenced earlier in the day to nine years in prison for intentionally possessing and smuggling drugs prohibited in Russia. Her fellow players watched the trial from the locker room in Connecticut, American media report.
The 31-year-old American is in the WNBA, the American women’s basketball league, an important player for Phoenix Mercury. She plays there with number 42, the number of seconds that the basketball players were silent. Several players from both WNBA teams had tears in their eyes. Spectators chanted after the silence: “Bring her back!”

Biden finds prison sentence Griner unacceptable
President Joe Biden called the long prison sentence for Griner “unacceptable” in a statement on Thursday. He called on Russia to release her immediately, “so that she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends and teammates”.
There is a chance that Griner will become part of a prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia. But there is still little clarity about that.
