This Friday (21), the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) was released, revealing that, in 2023, Brazil had approximately 100.7 million employed people. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), around 76.9% of Brazilian workers, that is, three out of every four, did not complete higher education.

Job market

According to Jefferson Mariano, socioeconomic analyst at IBGE, the research shows that many workers interrupted higher education to enter the job market, as many jobs do not exclude higher education. In contrast, the proportion of workers with a degree is growing slowly.

Mariano also pointed out that the development of the market and the return of public exams open more opportunities for trained workers, showing the harsh reality about the difficulty of accessing education in Brazil.

Market recovery

Mariano also highlighted that, despite continued growth, the increase in the number of workers reflects a recovery in the country's job market. Since the beginning of the Pnad Contínua series, the number of people employed in the country has increased by 12.3%, reaching the 100 million mark for the first time in 2023.

It is worth mentioning that, after a few years, there was a resumption in the hiring of workers by the public sector through competitions, mostly completed by people with higher education”, says Mariano. He concluded by highlighting that signs of a timid economic recovery were already visible in 2017, a period that led to the resumption of investments.

At 57.6%, IBGE reported that the employment level of the Brazilian population was calculated by the proportion between employed people and those of working age. Although this level is below the 2013 peak, it indicates a recovery from the decline seen between 2013 and 2017, caused by the recession.
