Brazil Women’s Volleyball Team Qualifies for Nations League Finals Without Playing
The Brazilian Women’s Volleyball Team qualified for the knockout stage of the League of Nations without having to enter the court. The feat happened last Saturday (01) after Serbia’s defeat to the Dominican Republic. With this, Brazil does not run the risk of being out of the top eight in the competition. The Brazilian team plays its last game this Sunday (02), against Thailand at 10:30 am, Brasilia time.
The Dominican Republic, coached by Brazilian coach Marcos Kwiek, overcame Serbia, the current world champion, and guaranteed the Brazilian team’s place in the next phase. The match was won by 3 sets to 2, with partials of 22/25, 25/15, 23/25, 25/19 and 15/10.
The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation used social networks to celebrate the classification of the Women’s National Team, where it wrote: “It’s the finals! The women’s team is qualified for the final phase of the League of Nations 2023! With Serbia’s defeat to the Dominican Republic, the Brazilians are guaranteed to be among the top eight in the competition! Thanks, Brazil!”.

Currently, the Brazilian team is in sixth place, with seven wins and 21 points. Despite entering the court unconcerned with the classification, the team needs to show that it is still alive in the competition after losing two consecutive games against Canada and Turkey. In this last game, Brazil lost by 3 sets to 0, with partials of 22/25, 16/25 and 22/25.
The League of Nations is contested by 16 teams and each makes 12 matches in total. Only the first eight teams qualify for the quarterfinals, where theoretically the top teams face the last teams to qualify, as follows: the first place plays against the eighth, the second against the seventh and so on. That’s why ranking in the top positions is so important.
