Brazilian government orders evacuation of diplomatic corps in Syria

This Monday (2), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ordered an operation to remove the diplomatic corps from the Brazilian embassy in Damascus, Syria. The measure aims to protect the country's employees who were exposed to the country's armed conflict. Despite the withdrawal, the Brazilian embassy will remain open, but the Brazilian government cannot guarantee the security of the building and its employees.

International Reactions

With the overthrow of dictator Bashar Al-Assad, tension in the country has increased, which could generate even more serious consequences for the situation in the territory.

Brazil is not the only country to withdraw its representatives from the field of war. Several European countries emptied their embassies. The plan adopted consists of transferring diplomats and other civil servants to Lebanon, in protected convoys.

The decision was motivated by incidents that occurred at some embassies last weekend. Italy and Cuba are among the affected countries.

Currently, the perception is that there may be a confrontation between several extremist groups seeking control over their regions.

Since the overthrow of Assad, Israel has seen a high increase in military actions and bombings in Syria. In this context, experts believe in the chance of Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, to take advantage of the moment to definitively consolidate the Syrian territory that has been occupied by Israeli forces, with the possible support of the future US President, Donald Trump.

Brazilians in Syria

Data collected through the Consular Portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows that around 3 thousand Brazilians are in Syria, but, to date, there are no plans for their repatriation.

The diplomats' justification is that, due to low demand, there is still no need to send a Brazilian Air Force operation.
