Brian Cox regrets calling Johnny Depp 'overrated': 'I was a bit harsh'
Star of “Succession”, Brian Cox has backtracked on saying that Johnny Depp was “overrated” in his most recent autobiography, “Putting The Rabbit In The Hat'in free translation).
In an excerpt from the book, the 75-year-old actor reveals that he turned down the offer to play a character in the franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean” (the one who got the role offered was Jonathan Pryce). He had then written in the book: “Although I'm sure he [Depp] be very nice, he is too hot, too overrated.”

Cox also added by citing one of his colleague's most notable films, which by the way became a cinema classic: “I mean… 'Edward Scissorhands.' Let's be blunt: if you come in with hands like that, pale makeup, and scars all over you, you don't have to do anything. And he didn't. And then he did even less.”

In a new interview for the talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live”however, the veteran admitted that he was exaggerating in his words. “I just thought I was being a little harsh. You know; you go for the easy joke. And I went for the easy joke,” confessed. “That's what happened, and I kind of regret it. Because I'm not normally like that; I was just being a little superficial, a little flippant.”continued the Emmy winner.

In January he had already spoken about the subject, and told Yahoo Entertainment that at the time the biography was released, several of Depp's fans revolted and defended their idol against his controversial statements.
“What some people accused me of was my lack of respect, and I really don't disrespect anyone involved in this profession because I know how difficult it is”he justified. “Now, I may have thoughts about people's talent, but I certainly don't disrespect them. And my thoughts about Johnny Depp are minimal – absolutely minimal.”
