Bronchiolitis vaccine arrives in Brazil
– how to remain healthy, health related news, latest symptoms and treatments.

In April 2024, a vaccine against bronchiolitis was approved for the elderly and pregnant women, and the first doses are expected to arrive in the private health network during this week; the vaccine, Abrysvo, from the Pfizer laboratory, has as its main function to offer an immune response against respiratory infections caused by RSV. In principle, pregnant women should receive a single dose between weeks 24 and 36 of pregnancy, thus resulting in the production of antibodies in their system that will be transferred to the baby, strengthening their system.

Medical opinion

According to Pfizer's medical director, Adriana Ribeiro, the vaccine transfers antibodies from the mother's body to the baby through the placenta. “When the mother receives the vaccine, the antibodies produced by her cross the placenta, strengthening the baby's body, whose immune system is still developing,” According to the doctor, vaccination for pregnant women is a priority in the World Health Organization (WHO) plan, as it can reduce infant mortality rates and, consequently, reduce the overload in pediatric hospital units, in addition to alleviating the impact on families.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

It is a virus that causes acute inflammation of the bronchioles, which are responsible for conducting air into the lungs; the main symptoms include a runny nose, cough and fever, which can easily be confused with a virus, but if left untreated it can lead to hospitalization and worsening of existing health conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, liver disease and kidney disease in older adults.

RSV prevention

To prevent the disease, it is necessary to avoid contact or exposure of children and the elderly to people who are already infected, and to redouble basic care with hygiene and cleaning of objects that may be contaminated; in addition to the vaccine, palivizumab is also available, a monoclonal antibody highly recommended for children at high risk of developing severe RSV infection.
