Cancer: What symptoms indicate sarcoma?
Every year, around 1175 Belgians are told that they have sarcoma. It is a relatively rare disease that can have far-reaching consequences. But what exactly is sarcoma? What forms are there? And how can you recognize the symptoms? In this article we list the most important information.

What is sarcoma?
Although there are also benign sarcomas, the majority are malignant. This means that they are often aggressive and have a high chance of spreading to other parts of the body.

What types are there?
There are different types of sarcomas, depending on the tissue in which they arise. Some common types include:
- Osteosarcoma: Sarcoma that develops in the cells responsible for forming bone tissue. It usually occurs in the long growing bones of our body, such as the arms and legs. Osteosarcoma is most often diagnosed in teenagers and young adults.
- Liposarcoma: Sarcoma that originates in fatty tissue. This type can form deep within the body, making it sometimes difficult to recognize. Liposarcoma is most commonly found in the thighs or in the abdominal cavity.
- Leiomyosarcoma: Sarcoma that arises in the smooth muscle. Smooth muscle cells are found in various organs and tissues of the body, such as the uterus, intestines, blood vessels, and some other organs.
- Rhabdomyosarcoma: This type of sarcoma is most common in children and originates in the skeletal muscles. Early recognition of symptoms in children is crucial.
- Synovial sarcoma: Sarcoma that occurs in the joints, such as knees and arms. This type can cause problems with movement and mobility.
- Angiosarcoma: Sarcoma that originates in the blood vessels or lymphatic vessels. These are aggressive tumors that can grow quickly and spread to other parts of the body, making them difficult to treat.

What causes sarcoma?
The exact causes of sarcomas are not yet known, but there are several factors that may play a role in the development of these tumors:
- Genetic predisposition: One of the most important factors that can play a role in the development of sarcomas is a genetic predisposition. Some people inherit certain genes that make them more susceptible to developing these tumors.
- Radiation exposure: Exposure to certain types of radiation, such as ionizing radiation, may increase the risk of developing sarcomas. This may occur in people who have had radiation therapy for other cancers.
- Genetic mutations: Some sarcomas are caused by genetic mutations that occur during a person’s lifetime. These mutations can disrupt the normal functioning of cells and lead to uncontrolled tissue growth.
- Heredity: Although sarcomas are not usually hereditary, certain genetic conditions, such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome, can increase the risk of developing these tumors.
What are the symptoms?
Sarcomas can cause different symptoms depending on their location and size:
- Swelling or lumps: One of the most common symptoms of sarcomas is the appearance of an unusual swelling or lump at the site of the tumor. This can sometimes be painful and may become larger as the tumor grows.
- Pain and tenderness: Some sarcomas can cause pain and tenderness at the site of the tumor. This can be due to pressure on nearby tissues or nerves.
- Limited movement: In cases where the tumor is close to a joint, it can limit the movement of that joint and cause stiffness.
- Fatigue and weight loss: In later stages of the disease, general symptoms such as fatigue and unexplained weight loss may occur.

When should you see a doctor?
The earlier sarcoma is detected, the greater the success of the treatment. If you experience any symptoms that may indicate sarcoma, do not hesitate to consult a doctor for a thorough examination:
- Monitor changes: Pay close attention to any changes in your body, such as swelling or lumps that don't go away.
- Persistent Pain: If you experience persistent pain that does not improve with time, it is wise to seek medical attention.
- Changes in mobility: If you are having trouble moving or notice that your joints feel stiff, don't take any chances and get it checked out.

How can you reduce the risk of sarcoma?
While it's not always possible to completely prevent sarcomas, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk.
- Healthy lifestyle: A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol use, can reduce the risk of several types of cancer.
- Sun protection: In certain types of sarcomas, such as angiosarcomas, exposure to sunlight can be a risk factor. So make sure you have adequate sun protection.
- Medical follow-up: If you have a genetic condition that increases your risk of sarcomas, it is important to see a doctor regularly and have any symptoms investigated promptly.
