Chinese Olympic Committee appeals to fans

The Chinese Olympic Committee on Friday called on fans of popular Chinese athletes to behave politely and cautiously during the upcoming Winter Games in Beijing.

“Follow our sports stars wisely and avoid inappropriate words and actions,” reads an official statement from the committee.

China fears disorder during the sporting event, pointing to the influence of fan clubs. “Lately, out of love for athletes from the national team, fans have exhibited excessive behavior in public areas such as airports, by pulling on athletes or pushing them. That has a negative social impact,” the Olympic committee said.

The athletes have also received clear instructions from the Chinese authorities. In the run-up to the Games, they should avoid contacts with their fans as much as possible and therefore not accept invitations from fan clubs to attend fan events.

“Always carry out the core socialist values, put all your energy into training hard, promote the Chinese sports spirit and strive to gain credit for the motherland,” the statement reads.
