Daniella Pineda Moved by Reaction to Costume

The actress Daniella Pinedawho will play the character Faye Valentine in the live-action Cowboy Bebop from Netflix, responded to sexist comments about the actress's alleged lack of resemblance to her portrayal in the anime. When Netflix released the looks of the protagonists of the adaptation, many fans were pleased with the characterization of the characters, but others didn't like what they saw, especially in relation to Pineda's character.

On the internet, some fans of the classic 1998 anime were outraged and made sexist comments, criticizing the fact that Daniella Pineda does not have a body similar to that of the character Faye Valentine. The comments also extended to her costume, which is not exactly faithful to the cartoon.

In the animated series, Faye Valentine wears a low-cut yellow blouse, low-waisted yellow shorts, black suspenders, and a loose red jacket. In addition to the tight clothing, she has large breasts and a very thin waist. In the Netflix live-action series, the production chose to cut the exaggerated sexualization of the costume, but without removing the similarities with the original character.

The comments reportedly came on the day Netflix released promotional images for the series, on August 23. Some fans also complained about the choice of Mustafa Shakir for the cast. In response to the complaints, Daniella Pineda posted some stories on her Instagram to speak directly to fans who criticized the live-action choices. In an ironic tone, the actress apologized for not having the same body as the animated version of Faey Valentine.

“First, I'd like to apologize to the fans for not anatomically matching the character Faye Valentine. Six-foot-five breasts, two-inch waist… You know, they looked everywhere for that woman and couldn't find her, really weird… So they stuck with my small ass…”the actress joked.

Pineda continued to make fun of the situation, saying that she should put herself in a time machine to find other parents and try to be a little taller. Then she went on to talk about her costume:

“You know, we tried, but doing stunts, things get blown up, they get torn, sometimes they just get completely lost… Anyway, like I was saying, that original suit, they made a few of them, but like I said, they kind of got swallowed up by my body, never to be recovered, so we needed to build something that could stand the test of time.”, he said ironically.

Some anime fans took Pineda's video as an insult, even sending private messages to the actress. Others, in turn, supported the artist's outrage, even saying that her attitude reflects exactly the personality that Faye Valentine would have when being provoked.

In the plot of Cowboy Bebopin the year 2071, a group of bounty hunters wander aimlessly through outer space looking for work. In addition to Pineda, the The live-action cast also includes: John Cho, Alex Hassell, Pineda, Elena Satine and Shakir. Alex Garcia Lopez will direct the first two episodes of the adaptation. In total, there will be 10 chapters in the first season, which premieres on November 19, 2021.
