Stéfanos Tsitsipás reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros on Tuesday night for the second time in his career. The Greek was too strong in three sets for Daniil Medvedev, who lost partly due to a private service on match point, and meets Alexander Zverev for a place in the final.

The 22-year-old Tsitsipás needed 2 hours and 23 minutes to beat the three-year-old Medvedev: 6-3, 7-6 (3) and 7-5. Tsitsipás particularly benefited from the many unnecessary errors (44) of his Russian opponent, who also did not deal effectively with his break points.

In the third set, Medvedev appeared to bring the tension back and led 4-2, but Tsitsipás showed resilience with a love break at 3-4. At 5-6, Medvedev had to keep his service game to force a tiebreak, but on match point, the Russian decided to serve out of nowhere and walk to the net. Tsitsipás was not surprised and drew the game with a simple winner.

It is the fourth time Tsitsipás has reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament and the second year in a row he has managed to do so at Roland Garros. Last year, the world number five in Paris went down in a five-setter against Novak Djokovic, who then lost the final to Rafael Nadal.

Medvedev did a lot better than usual this year at Roland Garros, where he has been eliminated in the first round each time in the last four years. The world number two has been in the final of a Grand Slam tournament twice, but at the 2019 US Open and this year’s Australian Open he went down in the final.

Tsitsipás can reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career, but he will have to deal with Zverev first. The world number six did not have a child with Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his quarter-final in Paris.

The 24-year-old Zverev took care of three-year-old Davidovich Fokina, the world number 46, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1 in just over an hour and a half. The German lost his service game three times in the first set, but Davidovich Fokina was broken four times in the first act.

Throughout the match, the Spaniard won only three of his 12 service games and also made 37 unnecessary errors, 22 more than Zverev. The 2020 LOSING US Open finalist also scored more winners on the Philippe-Chatrier court.

Despite his chanceless elimination, Davidovich can leave Fokina Roland Garros with his head held high, as last year he was already stranded in the second round and that was his best ever result in Paris until this edition. This year Davidovich Fokina was narrowly too strong for Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round.

Zverev is in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for only the third time in his career and it is only the first time he has done so at Roland Garros. In 2018 and 2019 ‘Sascha’ was stranded in the quarter-finals and last year the fourth round was the final station on the French gravel.

The other posters in the men’s quarterfinals are Djokovic-Matteo Berrettini and Nadal-Diego Schwartzman.
