Dead and several wounded in shooting in American church

In a shooting in a church in Laguna Woods, just south of Los Angeles in the US state of California, a person died on Sunday and several people were injured.

One of the victims died at the scene and at least four others were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Among the victims are no children. That confirms the authorities of Laguna Woods.

Around 1:30 p.m. (local time), police received a report of a shooting at Geneva Presbyterian Church. A suspect has been arrested and a weapon has been seized, reports the police. Nothing is yet known about the motive of the shooter.

It would be an Asian man in his sixties. Most of the victims are of Asian descent, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Parishioners were attending a banquet after a church service when the man started shooting. They managed to overpower him, “tied his legs with an extension cord and confiscated at least two weapons” before officers arrived on the scene, a police spokesman said at a news conference. “That group of churchgoers showed exceptional courage and heroism. They undoubtedly prevented more injuries and deaths.”

A day before the incident, there was a shooting at a grocery store in the city of Buffalo. This makes it the second fatal mass shooting in the US of the weekend.

On Saturday, an eighteen-year-old white man shot and killed ten people in Buffalo, a city in upstate New York. Another three people were injured. Eleven of the thirteen victims were black Americans.
