Dear Silva Combat Racism by Aguinaldo Silva: Ignorance

On Friday (26), actor Ícaro Silva responded to soap opera author Aguinaldo Silva's statement about singer Beyoncé being the first black woman to wear a Tiffany necklace, valued at 160 million. On his Twitter profile, Aguinaldo criticized the singer and said that the fact is not social justice.

“Beyoncé becomes the fourth person in history and the first black woman to wear the Tiffany Diamond”: yes, but for me, social justice will only be achieved when any woman, regardless of race, age, religion or fame, can wear it. Will that ever happen? What do you think? Joelly is 37 years old, black, a housekeeper, mother of three children and no father to help raise them. I can only imagine what goes through her head when she reads news like this about Beyoncé's million-dollar necklace. Guys, let's get real for a moment, okay?”

Ícaro, like Aguinaldo, used a black woman and former cleaning lady as an example: his own mother. In a long post on Instagram, the 34-year-old actor responded to the older man's statements. ''Thanks to my mother's anti-racist upbringing, I learned that there would be those who would use their sharp tongue and white privilege to try to diminish our achievements and point out our place.''

He also took the opportunity to criticize the ''whitening'' from the cast of Aguinaldo's soap operas. ''Your biased view of Brazilian society, expressed in soap operas that are still so whitewashed today, does not take into account our history, nor our size''.

Icarus' text in full:

“Hey @aguinaldofsilva, how are you?
We don't know each other and it's likely that we'll never know each other, since I'm already too old for the mediocre roles reserved for black people in your works, but I feel it's my duty to introduce you to Jô do Espírito Santo, a black woman from the northeast and the outskirts of the city who raised two children in the favela, under constant violence, on a cleaning lady's salary. That's because I'm sure you're not capable of speaking for Joelly, or for any other black Brazilian woman.
Joe, what was 25 when she gave birth to me, she taught me everything about exalting and celebrating our own in their rise. She taught me to root for any and all black people who were put to the test, as you are now trying to do with the immeasurable Beyoncé.Thanks to Jô's anti-racist education, my childhood reference is Cinthya Rachel's Biba and not Maria Meneghel's Xuxa. Thanks to my mother's anti-racist education, I learned that there would be those who would use their sharp tongue and white privilege to try to diminish our achievements and point out our place. You don't know anything about Joelly, Aguinaldo. You don't know anything about Jô, or Beyoncé. It is clear that this is not the case. His biased view of Brazilian society, expressed in soap operas that are still so whitewashed today, does not take into account our history, nor our size. I want Beyoncé loaded with diamonds, Aguinaldo. I want to see her covered from head to toe in the most precious stones ever stolen from the African continent by Europeans. I want to see Beyoncé swimming in a vault of diamonds like she's Uncle Scrooge, I want to have to wear sunglasses to see Beyoncé, I want “Beyoncé” to be synonymous with a $30 million diamond. And I wish the same for every black woman on this planet! Beyoncé is the present and increasingly the future, Aguinaldo. Beyoncé is Joelly, Jô, Taís, Pathy, Sheron, Cris, Jéssica, Sofia, Lellê, Iza, Uriass, Drika, Tassia, Linn, Liniker, Alcione, Eliana Pittman, Carol de Niterói and Elza. Beyoncé is me. Something you can't identify and that you never knew how to represent. The Black Elite that racism prevents you from even recognizing and that makes any flawed representation resulting from racist ignorance obsolete.”

Criticism from other black actors

In a post on Instagram, actors Rafael Zulu and Jéssica Ellen made a point of showing their indignation at Aguinaldo Silva's speech.

''Aguinaldo, let's talk about Brazil? When in your soap operas did your protagonists have skin like mine? When in your soap operas was Brazilian black culture addressed to help the self-esteem of the black population? When I look at the image of the powerful and millionaire Beyoncé, I think about the power that we black people are and how much she inspires thousands of black people all over the world. In 2021, the list of black protagonists on Brazilian TV doesn't even have 5 names… And it's not for lack of talent, but rather for lack of opportunities. The problem in Brazil is not that Beyoncé is a millionaire, it's that the white elite is bothered by our autonomy and social ascension. The problem is that we are STILL seen ONLY as descendants of slaves and not REAL POWERS! The problem is that we have a country with more than 50% of the population black and this is not even represented in films and soap operas…”, wrote Jessica.

Ícaro Silva comments on controversial video by Juliana Paes: 'He doesn't know what poverty is'

“Ahhhhh Mr. Aguinaldo Silva, wake up! I've never seen a black protagonist in your work… and there were quite a few. You were always part of the dream team of writers at Rede Globo in its golden years and NOTHING black was featured. Now you come to criticize you for this at the height of the championship??? For us, you are a reference and a ruler of where we want and can go. Don't come and put us against our people… We won't fall for that anymore!”completed Zulu.
