Depp missed out on role,

According to Johnny Depp’s agent, the actor grabbed next to the lead role in the sixth part of Pirates of the Caribbean after an opinion piece by his ex-wife Amber Heard appeared. The actor would receive a gage of 22.5 million dollars (more than 21 million euros) for his portrayal of Jack Sparrow, writes The New York Times Monday.

The Washington Post published the article in late 2018 in which Heard describes himself as “a victim of domestic violence,” without mentioning Depp’s name. According to the actor, the play has destroyed his reputation and his career.

In court in Virginia, Depp’s agent Jack Whigham testified Monday that the actor had a verbal agreement with Disney to once again take on the role of Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates movie.

At the beginning of 2019, according to the agent, it became clear that Disney was “going in a different direction”.

“After the op-ed, it was impossible to get him a studio film,” said Whigham, who has represented the actor since 2016. Heard’s lawyers argued that Depp had no chance of winning the role even before the article was published.

The agent then said that Disney had not yet decided whether Depp would appear in the film. With film producer Jerry Bruckheimer, he tried to convince Disney that Depp should get a role in the film again.

“We had hope,” Whigham said, “but at the beginning of 2019 it became clear that it was over.”

The piece submitted to The Washington Post prompted Depp to file a lawsuit against his ex-wife.

He is seeking $50 million in damages for defamation. Heard, in turn, is demanding $100 million from Depp.
