Diabetic Dermopathy: What are Sugar Spots?

Sugar spots are called 'diabetic dermopathy' in medical terms. They are oval red spots of half to one centimeter that are mainly on the shins. The spots are more common in people over 50 years old and in people who have had diabetes for a longer period of time.

Cause

Diabetes can cause changes in small blood vessels and these changes can lead to skin problems such as diabetic dermopathy.

The exact cause of the spots is unknown, however, researchers have several theories. For example, there could be thermal damage around the spots, there could be slower wound healing due to reduced blood flow in the area and nerve degeneration.

There is also a possible link between diabetic dermopathy and other complications of diabetes. For example, research has shown that people with diabetic dermopathy are significantly more likely to have eye, nerve, or kidney damage than people without the condition.

Diabetic dermopathy appears spontaneously on the shins, usually on both legs. The patches are initially light pink, brown or purple and feel a bit scaly. They may appear slightly indented.
Over time, the spots turn brown and round or oval. They are usually less than a centimeter in diameter, but can grow up to an inch. They can look like age spots, especially if they appear in clusters.
In rare cases, diabetic dermopathy can also appear on other sites on the body, such as higher on the thighs or on the forearms or sides of the feet.

The condition itself is harmless and does not cause any additional symptoms or pain. So, patches of skin that burn, tingle or itch are a sign of another skin condition.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for diabetic dermopathy. Because the spots themselves are harmless and asymptomatic, treatment is not necessary. The condition usually goes away on its own, but healing time can vary from person to person.

The most important thing you can do is to keep your blood sugar levels under control. This will not only help control diabetic skin conditions, it will also help prevent other complications of diabetes.

If you find the sugar spots unsightly, you can cover them up with makeup. If the skin patches are dry or flaky, moisturizing cream can help relieve the symptoms and prevent the spots from spreading.

Research also shows that applying lotions containing ingredients such as collagen or glycerin can help reduce the appearance of changes in skin tone.
