Francis Lawrence, director of “The Song of Birds and Snakes”, the new film in the “Hunger Games” franchise, confirmed that the pre-sequel features a series of small references to the original saga. Among them, a tribute to the protagonist Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) was confirmed by the filmmaker.
During an interview with Buzzfeed, the director commented that the Easter egg is “a scene where Snow is in the arena and we see a broken bow – because nobody knows how to use a bow and arrow in this game. That was something we added.”
Lawrence adds that the team behind the story of this new film dedicated themselves to trying to make these small tributes to “iconic elements from the original stories” whenever they had the opportunity.
Fan theories
Fans of the saga theorize a possible connection between the films' protagonists, the characters Lucy Gray (Rachel Zegler) and Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). However, co-writer Michael Lesslie has already ruled out the possibility of a relationship between the two, but recognized the importance of Lucy's legacy for Katniss' mission against the Capital.
Lesslie commented that he cannot confirm this type of theory, as Suzanne Collins, the author of the books, keeps the secrets of their creation very closely guarded. However, the co-writer theorized about Lucy's journey after the end of the pre-sequel and said she believes that the character “left her home and settled within the boundaries of the districts“, perhaps “for district 13”.
Finally, Lesslie added: “Perhaps she met people who watched her games and were inspired by her music, which later helped shape Katniss..”

The feature film adapted from the book of the same name “The Song of Birds and Snakes”, precedes the story of the book saga “The Hunger Games”, adapted for cinemas in 2012.
In this new film, we follow the journey of Lucy Gray and Snow in the fight for their lives in the first edition of the Hunger Games, a reality show in which the last participant alive wins. The prequel was considered a box office success and has already grossed around US$315.3 million in cinemas around the world.
