Discover the beauty secrets behind the movie Wicked

With the arrival of the film Wicked, the characterizations, including makeup, hair and clothing of the characters, act as attractions for the public, faithfully communicating with the plot and proposal of the film. In this article, we explore what's behind the revelations to Glamor about the impeccable characterizations of the characters played by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo who, with pink and green, won over the public.

Elphaba's green makeup

Elphaba's green makeup is one of the elements that most caught the public's attention in Wicked, precisely because it resulted in an impeccable characterization. The film's makeup designer, Frances Hannon, told Glamor US in an exclusive interview how Cynthia Erivo's entire beauty process worked.

To obtain the perfect result, Frances Hannon assured that it was not easy. This is because it took testing and testing until she was able to discard the use of visual effects and finally develop green body makeup together with David Stoneman, a make-up manufacturer that features special effects.

The makeup artist revealed that while Cynthia Erivo was in the United States and she was in London, at the recording location, she began the process by bringing models with the appropriate skin tone and applying different shades of green using an airbrush every day, until she could reach the desired tone: “We needed to develop something that would work in any type of lighting, because on set Cynthia would go through countless light changes in a single scene, let alone an entire day.”, she said, stating that she would not be able to change her makeup depending on the type of light.

The final addition of makeup arrived only when she found a tube of neon foundation for her eyes. A product imported from Canada, it was crucial for finalizing the shade of green created by her and David, providing the reflective quality that was missing and working in all types of light, which was exactly what she wanted.

To ensure everything worked correctly, another makeup artist, Sarah Nuth, arrived on the scene. She was responsible for finding the tone of Elphaba's makeup contour, using purple and similar tones.

When questioned, Frances Hannon revealed that the makeup removal process, which involves the help of three people, totals 45 minutes.

Aspects of Glinda and Elphaba

Still during the interview with Glamour, Frances Hannon stated that, for Glinda, it was necessary to search for an appearance that faithfully referred to the glittering and princess universe. Hannon describes the character's makeup as makeup that wasn't too complex to do, but with a lot of detail.

This is because it was necessary to cover Ariana's tattoos with her own makeup line, REM Beauty, along with other products. In addition, the highlighting of aspects of Ariana's eyebrows and also her eyes was well done. All with the aim of a more youthful look.

Cynthia's process wasn't that easy either. After all, it took more than 60 tests not only for the green tone of the makeup, mentioned above, but also for the minute details of the freckles and the look as a whole.

It was taken into account the fact that, in her daily life outside of her work routine, Cynthia shaves her eyebrows frequently and keeps her head shaved. Therefore, it became necessary to transfer eyebrows and contours.

Ariana and Cynthia's hairstyling secrets

Hannon revealed to Glamor that as soon as she arrived, Ariana's biggest desire was to go blonde immediately. Therefore, the actress only wore a blonde wig, having specifically had seven of them, during rehearsals and script readings. This is because, according to her, Ariana wanted to guarantee her faithful incorporation of Glinda on all occasions.

Elphaba's micro braids underwent countless research, which involved research from the history of braids to the existence of contemporary looks. Frances Hannon tells Glamor that, in the first stages of research, she found a model that suited Cynthia.

She reinforced Cynthia's desire for a timeless and matching appearance, taking into account everything from her clothing to her height. A style that wouldn't overwhelm Cynthia.

Therefore, she said that four styles of micro braids, which left the head shape small and adjusted, were chosen, developing together with Elphaba throughout the film.

With this journey into Wicked's universe of fashion and beauty, it is worth highlighting that the film premiered this Thursday (21) and is now available in cinemas across Brazil.
