Disney vs. Russians Create Impasse

Scarlett Johansson's lawsuit against Disney, due to the hybrid release of Black Widow, has been going on for quite some time, many people within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have been defending and supporting the actress, as was the case with Elizabeth Olsen. But this process has also made actors and directors start to think more about their rights and demand a better contract.

And this process this time has caused the directing duo, the Russo Brothers, to be hesitant before renewing a new contract with Disney to direct new Marvel films. The news comes from The Wall Street Journal.

Scarlett Johansson decided to file a lawsuit against Disney after the release of Black Widow, because her contract included a clause that stipulated that she would receive a large part of her salary based on the film's box office performance. However, since Disney decided to release the film in theaters and on Disney+ at the same time, the actress ended up losing out, since the contract she signed did not provide for this release option.

Disney and brothers Anthony and Joe Russo had an active contract for them to direct another MCU film, but with all the imbroglio between Disney and Scarlett Johansson, this contract was suspended until it was modified, aiming for a possible situation that would make the future film be released in a hybrid format, as happened with Black Widow due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Russo Brothers directed Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame, as well as Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016).
