Cell phones have become an essential device in people's daily lives, whether for their personal or professional lives. One of the greatest achievements of technological advancement is the ease of communicating simply and quickly, without the need for many resources.

However, even with all the technology we have now, it can still happen that we run out of network signal and/or Wi-Fi on our cell phone, being outside the coverage area or for some other reason.

To help in these moments, Apple makes it possible to send messages via satellite, starting with the iPhone 14 and iOS 18, allowing the user to communicate with friends, family and anyone else who needs it. See below how it works.

How to send a message via satellite on iPhone

Apple brought a new way to communicate with iOS 18 when you are off the network or when it is unavailable, and not just in cases of emergency. Now, all iPhones from model 14 onwards can access the satellite messaging feature.

However, for now, the function is only available to users in the United States and Canada. If you want to know how to access the resource, check out the step-by-step guide.

Time required: 10 minutes

  1. Be in an area with no signal

You need to be in an area with no cell signal or Wi-Fi for iOS to detect that you are in this situation.
As soon as this happens, a notification on the locked screen will inform you that you can send messages via satellite.

  2. Open the Messages app

You'll be prompted to start accepting messages. If you haven't already done so, your iPhone will prompt you to connect to a satellite to send a text message.

If you have an iPhone 14 Pro or later, the Dynamic Island at the top of the screen will have indicator dots showing the connection strength and, if you can improve it, arrows indicating whether you should go left or right .

You can tap Dynamic Island to open the Connection Assistant and get more help.

  3. With a good signal, a satellite icon will appear on the screen, indicating the connection.

If your emergency contacts or Family Sharing group members sent messages while you were away, they will be delivered as soon as signal is established.

From there, you can also send messages normally. If you lose connection, you will need to start a new satellite session.

  4. SMS via Satellite

If you can't send an iMessage via satellite, for example, if the person you're trying to text has an iPhone that doesn't have iOS 18 or has a non-Apple device, or if you don't have sent an iMessage to that person recently, you can use satellite SMS messaging.

Other ways to access satellite resources on iPhone

When you're somewhere without cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, you can also find satellite resources through Connection Assistant:

  • In Control Center: Swipe down from the top-right corner of iPhone to open Control Center, then tap the cellular button on the right. Tap Satellite and choose Satellite Messaging (or another satellite feature).
  • In the Settings app: Open Settings, tap Satellite, then choose Satellite Messaging (or another satellite feature).

If you have cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, the Satellite option in Settings will not appear, and the Satellite option in Control Center will open the Satellite Connection Demo.

How to receive text messages via satellite while within a coverage area

If you have cellular or Wi-Fi coverage and are messaging someone using Satellite Messaging:

  • In iMessage conversations, you'll see an alert that your contact is accepting satellite messages.
  • After you tap send, you'll also need to tap Send via Satellite below the message bubble.
  • If you are an emergency contact or part of a Family Sharing group, you can send an SMS message before your contact sends a satellite message. The person will receive the message as soon as they start accepting satellite messages.
