Drew Barrymore Abandons MTV Awards Presentation

The American actress and presenter Drew Barrymore announced that it will no longer present the “MTV Movie & TV Awards”, which will take place on Sunday (7) in Los Angeles. The decision was made in support of the screenwriters on strike Hollywood.

In her statement, Drew Barrymore wrote:

“I listened to the writers and, to truly respect them, I will no longer host the 'MTV Movie & TV Awards' in solidarity with the strike. Everything we celebrate and honor in cinema and TV was born from their creation. Until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait, but I will watch from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, which has truly been one of the best partnerships I've ever had. And I can't wait to be a part of next year's awards show when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that lets fans choose who the award goes to and is truly inclusive.”

Drew Barrymore may not be the only name not attending the awards show. The red carpet itself and pre-award interviews will no longer happen.

Those responsible for the awards show that fans' votes will still be honored, and whoever wins the award will receive their prize even if they don't show up at the venue, with some speeches being pre-recorded. They are also studying plans for celebrities who decide not to participate, without the awards, on-site and online audiences suffering.

The screenwriters of Hollywood have been on strike with a total stoppage since last Tuesday (2), as protests over the unsuccessful negotiation of salary increases. Among the demands are earnings adjustments based on inflation, payments for residual earnings, series with shorter seasons and regulation of the use of artificial intelligence. Several productions are already being affected by the strike.
