Pandev uncertain due to ankle injury

Goran Pandev’s playing for North Macedonia in Monday’s game against the Dutch national team is uncertain. The veteran did not train Saturday because of ankle problems.

The 37-year-old Pandev sustained the injury during the warm-up for Thursday’s group game against Ukraine, according to the North Macedonian federation.

Pandev, however, was just at the kick-off of the game in Bucharest. With the Macedonian record international in the ranks, the team lost to national coach Igor Angelovski 2-1. A goal by Pandev was disallowed for offside.

North Macedonia has already been eliminated from the European Championship due to the defeats against Austria (1-3) and Ukraine, even if the country wins against the Netherlands. The number 62 in the FIFA rankings can no longer pass both Austria and Ukraine, because the mutual result goes for the goal balance. The Dutch team is already certain of the round of 16 with six points.

North Macedonia will play its first major tournament as an independent country at the current European Championships. Until 1992, the country was part of Yugoslavia. The Netherlands-North Macedonia starts on Monday at 18.00 in the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam.
