The first group of Ukrainian refugees will arrive in Amsterdam on Tuesday. It concerns eighty people who are being accommodated in a hostel in the Southeast district, the municipality of Amsterdam confirms to Afrilatest.com after reporting by Het Parool . Several municipalities are open to the reception of refugees.

Alderman Rutger Groot Wassink (Asylum Affairs) is pleased that Amsterdam can receive war refugees so quickly. Last weekend, the municipality already worked on an overview of the number of people that the city can accommodate.

In the A&O Hostel, where there are existing places for emergency shelter, there is room for two to three hundred refugees, a spokesperson told Afrilatest. This concerns short-term care, i.e. for a number of days. The municipality is still working on plans for long-term care.

Fifty people had already reported to Ter Apel last weekend. Not everyone from this group applied for asylum either.

The municipality of Ede will also receive refugees. Defense has agreed to make the Harskamp army camp available for the reception of refugees on the site. About eight hundred people can be accommodated at the same time at the camp. It is not yet known when the location will be used exactly.

The cabinet is in talks with the municipalities of Zaanstad, Haarlem and The Hague and the Ministry of Defense, among others, about the reception of Ukrainians. The main focus is on long-term solutions for the reception of refugees.

Several initiatives started for refugee reception

More than 500,000 people have fled Ukraine, according to the United Nations. Dutch asylum centers have been full for months due to the increased influx of refugees from Afghanistan, among others.

As a result, the responsibility for the reception of Ukrainian refugees now rests with the central government and the municipalities.

Various initiatives have been launched in the Netherlands to receive refugees from Ukraine. Churches, mosques and organizations of all faiths are preparing for the arrival of refugees.

The Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PKN) advises people who have a place to stay to register with Takecarebnb . This organization, which works together with the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), arranges accommodation for recognized asylum seekers with host families in the Netherlands.

Ukrainian refugees not returned for the time being

Ukrainian refugees are in principle allowed to stay in the Netherlands for 90 days and can travel freely. So they don’t have to register. The cabinet has already said it will likely extend the 90-day period if the conflict between Russia and Ukraine drags on.

State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum Affairs) previously said not to send people back if there is still a war. Asylum seekers from Ukraine who previously came to the Netherlands will also not be returned for the time being.

On Thursday, there will be another meeting in Brussels about the reception of refugees in the EU Member States.
