At least eight people were killed in a shooting at a light rail depot in the American city of San José, California. Several people were injured. The gunman, whose motive is still unknown, was also killed.

The suspect first set fire to his house on Wednesday morning (local time) and then drove to a union meeting of a local carrier. There he started shooting around him, the Los Angeles Times reports, according to the police. The man was an employee of the company.

The emergency services say the number of victims may still rise. The police confirm to the newspaper that the shooter is dead, but did not elaborate on the cause of death of the man.

Sources tell the Los Angeles Times that the suspect, a 50-year-old man, is believed to have committed suicide. Several weapons and ammunition are said to have been found in his house.

Light rail trains are stored and maintained at the yard where the shooting took place. The victims are said to be employees of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). In addition to the light rail network, the VTA also provides bus transport in the region.
