A survey carried out by the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) and released last Friday (27) showed that 65% of cars sold in Brazil by 2035 will be electric. The study applies to brand new cars; To carry it out, CEOs of automakers, 3,000 consumers and 40 customers across the country were interviewed.

The study points out that next year 13% of sales will correspond to electric cars, whether fully electric or with a hybrid propulsion system. Those with a combustion engine – 87% projected for 2025 – are expected to correspond to just 14% of sales in 2040. The best-selling model will be the “100% electric”, followed by the mild hybrid and full hybrid.

Electrical models

Even though an electric car is understood as a single model, the category is differentiated into four examples: Light hybrid, Full hybrid, Plug-in hybrid and 100% electric. The latter is the most famous and accounts for the majority of sales. The others are distinguished by the use of their batteries. The plug-in Hybrid is capable of 40 km/l, while the full Hybrid achieves 20 km/l and 13 km/l.

Anfavea also predicts that, even with the growing sales of electric vehicles, the majority of cars that will circulate in 2040 must be combustion-powered. The flex vehicle (ethanol and gasoline), with 40% of the share, will correspond to the most famous model among Brazilians.

Expert opinion

Vice-president of Anfavea, Luis Carlos Moraes pointed out the challenges with expanding sales of electric cars:

“We have a big challenge, which is infrastructure in Brazil. Today, around 90% of electric car owners recharge at home… On the other hand, the industry has been developing new technologies for faster recharging and larger batteries, which can encourage safety for new consumers.”

Moraes also highlighted the need for Brazil to produce electric models internally, as the country has financial difficulties just importing. There is no large electric car factory in Brazil.
