“Elza ao vivo no Municipal” is released this Friday, the 13th

Elza Soares' new visual album titled “Elza live at Municipal” was recorded at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo on January 17th and 18th of this year, two days before the singer's death. The album released by the Deck label features 15 songs from different periods of Elza's career.

Pedro Loureiro, the singer's manager, stated in a press release that the choice of May 13th for the album's release was in reference to the day of the old black man in Umbanda and because “National Day of Denunciation Against Racism”coinciding with the date of the formal abolition of slavery in 1888.

In the recording, Elza used three costumes. The first costume, golden, was a reference to Oxum. The second, completely white because she is considered “the color that absorbs and scatters all others”. The third costume features a turban that goes from Elza's head to the top of the Theater, “like an astral connection”says Pedro. In the clip of “My Boy”released on April 25, it is possible to see Elza with the first costume, accompanied by a pianist in one of the Theatro's halls.

Elza told people close to her that, in the past, she was not welcome on the stage of the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. In an interview with Folha, Pedro Loureiro gave details of what Elza said about the project: “I will pour myself out on this stage in a way that no one will take me out of the wood grain. Elza will be ingrained in this entire stage”, says Loureiro, about the singer’s speech.

Also in an interview with Folha, Vanessa Soares, Elza's granddaughter, stated that: “When she was Conceição (Elza’s surname), we saw a small, fragile old lady. But when she started putting on makeup, she turned into a monster. She looked like she was two meters tall. Her voice, her look, everything about her changed a lot. But we had to understand that she was a 91-year-old body.”.

Loureiro also revealed that in the recording, “Elza was dancing with her shoulders, she was happy, laughing, carefree. She was always concerned about the end result, the hairstyle, the costume, the tones. But this time, she was free, confident. We thought it would be a trend for the next few years. Little did I know that she knew she was doing her last work.”.

“Elza ao vivo no Municipal” is the first posthumous album by Elza Soares, who also left an album with unreleased songs ready. The album called “Nos Tempos da Intolerância” is scheduled for release in August 2022.
