European Championship final, Günes to meet Italy,

Head coach Senol Günes is confident of facing Turkey’s opening game against Italy at the European Championships. The 69-year-old Turk believes his team will have nothing to do with ‘La Squadra Azzurra’, one of the title favourites, in Rome on Friday night.

“It’s good that I have some Serie A players in my squad because they know what’s going on in Italy and how to approach them,” Günes said at his press conference on Thursday night. “This is going to be a game between two strong teams and I believe we can win.”

Turkey starts the European Championship with confidence, because Günes’ team is still unbeaten this year. In March, the Dutch national team was put aside 4-2 in the qualifying series for the 2022 World Cup. With Italy (kick-off 9pm), Turkey will immediately meet one of the strongest teams at the European Championship in the opening game on Friday. (European Championship final, Günes to meet Italy,)

“Roberto Mancini has a lot of talented players at his disposal and as a former coach of Galatasaray he knows how Turkish football works,” Günes said. “We know the strength of Italy, but also the weaknesses. It’s going to be a tough fight technically, tactically and physically.”

In addition to Italy, Turkey will take on Switzerland and Wales in Group A. Turkey has never reached the final of a European Championship in the past, although the last four were reached in 2008. Günes is already dreaming of the final at Wembley.

‘We’re not the favourite in group, but I’d love it if we were to face Italy in the final. We must not lose our concentration, otherwise we could face major problems,” Günes warned.
