European country is victim of fires, landslides and deaths

Civil Protection has warned the population that this Friday (20), there will be heavy rains and thunderstorms in Portugal. The Government reported that after the latest events in the country that resulted in the deaths of citizens. In honor of all those who died, national mourning was decreed.

Rain and thunderstorms

More than seven victims died because of the fires that hit Portugal this week, and in solidarity with the victims, the Government of Portugal decreed that this Friday (20) will be a day of national mourning to honor the people who were victims of the forest fire tragedy that has occurred in the north and center of the country.

According to Portuguese channel RTP, Civil Protection reported that there is a chance of thunderstorms and heavy rain in the European country, with the possibility of landslides on land affected by the fires. According to information released by the European Copernicus system, the fires have already consumed more than 121 thousand hectares of vegetation since last Sunday.

Tragedy in Portugal

During the press conference of the Council of Ministers, this Thursday (19), António Leitão Amaro, who is Minister of the Presidency, made a point of thanking the “all the people who are helping to fight the fires”, he even talked about the answer to what the “recovery and support for affected populations, companies, local authorities, fire departments and all those who have suffered.” According to information from the newspaper Daily Newsthe Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), announced that the districts of Braga, Porto, Aveiro and Viana do Castelo are at high risk of entering yellow alert, due to the heavy rains and thunderstorms that will occur this Friday.

Portugal has been in the grip of a wave of fires for several days, with heat and wind. There are 42 active fires spread across the country, with around 3,900 firefighters mobilized to fight the fires. Local media reported that authorities had to carry out new evacuations on Tuesday (17) and Wednesday (18) in the Gondomar area, in the Porto region, in the north.

Among the dead is a 28-year-old Brazilian who worked at a forestry company, who died on Monday (16), burned by the fire. Among the other fatal victims are three firefighters who died trapped by the flames, trying to fight the fire in the Coimbra region on Tuesday. In addition to two people who had a heart attack and ended up not resisting, and a volunteer firefighter who died on Sunday due to a sudden illness during an operation.
