Den Edel passed away – Loek den Edel has died at the age of 88, Ajax reported on Monday evening. The former striker is the creator of Ajax’s first ever eredivisie goal.
Ajax played on 2 September 1956 for the first time in the eredivisie, which had just been established at that time. Den Edel gave the Amsterdammers a 1-0 victory over NAC. Ajax won the national title that season.
At the end of 1954, Den Edel had made his first appearance in the main force of the Amsterdammers. As a replacement for the injured Rinus Michels, he participated against Be Quick. It would be his first of 108 official matches for Ajax, in which he scored 56 times.
In 1959 Den Edel exchanged the club from the capital for Alkmaar ’54. After that he played for Vitesse and Limburgia.
Ajax is currently on 5,654 goals in the Eredivisie. The last big milestone was reached on February 15, 2015, when Ricardo Kishna scored goal number 5,000 in the home game with FC Twente.
