Japan earthquake – Four people have been killed in the massive earthquake that hit Japan late Wednesday night (local time), according to initial reports. More than a hundred people were injured.

The magnitude 7.4 quake struck off the coast of Fukushima, in the northeast of the country.

The quake brought back memories for Japanese people of the powerful seaquake that caused a devastating tsunami and nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011.

A government spokesman said the cause of death for the four people killed has yet to be determined. At least 107 others were injured, but most of these were minor injuries from falling objects or falls.

The severe quake derailed a Shinkansen express train, cracks appeared in highways and wreaked havoc in supermarkets as products fell from the shelves.

The authorities immediately issued a tsunami warning, with waves of possibly 1 meter. Deviating water levels of up to 30 centimeters were eventually measured.

The first aftershocks have already been felt in the region, which last week highlighted the devastating earthquake that hit the country 11 years earlier.

Japan, which often suffers from earthquakes, has very strict building standards and at first the damage seems to be not too bad.

Japan lies on the boundary of several tectonic plates and is rocked by one-fifth of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater.
