Jürgen Conings, the armed Belgian soldier who has been on the run for four days, is said to have stayed with a potential target on Monday evening, says Belgian minister Vincent Van Quickenborne (Justice) during a press moment on Friday. According to VRT , it would be Marc Van Ranst, the virologist who stays at a secure location as a precaution.

Conings is said to have huddled around the target for two hours and then turned around for reasons as yet unknown.
“He is someone who is very dangerous, and it is no coincidence that he is on the terrorist list. He wants to use violence against society, against our citizens,” said Van Quickenborne.

“He walks around with weapons of war and has the explicit objective of making victims.” The soldier is said to have prepared for his act for days.

On Friday, the earlier rumor that the soldier had hidden a booby trap in his car was also confirmed. Earlier, the Belgian public prosecutor’s office denied that Conings would have sabotaged his car. According to various media, it would be a wire-attached hand grenade, but this was not confirmed. Van Quickenborne does say that the booby trap consisted of war ammunition and was intended to make victims.

The 46-year-old Conings has been on the run since Monday. Because of his right-wing extremist ideas, he was already in the crosshairs of the security services, and when a family member found letters in which Conings made threats to the Belgian regime and virologists, the alarm was raised. A day later it turned out that Conings had a whole arsenal of weapons with him.

The manhunt for the soldier has now taken four days. The search is mainly concentrated around the Hoge Kempen National Park in Belgian Limburg. Conings’s car, containing the booby trap and four anti-tank missile launchers, was found there on Wednesday.
