Game of the month – At the end of the month, Afrilatest will discuss the most important games that have appeared. This time with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Gotham Knights, A Plague Tale: Requiem and Bayonetta 3.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series
- Rating: 4 stars
Modern Warfare IIis a revised version ofModern Warfare 2, which originally appeared in 2009. It feels like the original mainly serves as inspiration, with a story that has been revised at some points so that it fits better into the international relations of 2022.
The story ofModern Warfare II is pure popcorn. You play as a group of soldiers who shoot through Amsterdam, Chicago and fictional countries in the Middle East. The game doesn’t really do anything new, but it looks spectacular.
It feels like you’re playing in a high-quality Hollywood movie, although the story often feels like propaganda for the U.S. military.
As with previous games, you can also play competitively against each other. As with previous Call of Duty games, that is also well put together, although little is done to really shake up the old shooting formula.
Gotham Knights
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series
- Rating: 3 stars
Gotham Knightsis a Batman game without Batman. At the beginning, the famous superhero dies, after which you have to play one of his disciples: Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl or Red Hood. By sneaking, fighting and exploring, you try to discover who is behind Batman’s murder. You can play alone or with a friend.
The recentBatman Arkham games were highly rated, butGotham Knightsnever really manages to reach that level. It’s a nice game: fighting and sneaking feels fine, but due to a lack of variety and depth, it quickly becomes monotonous. TheArkham games were better – while the last part of it is already seven years old.
Gotham Knightsis exclusively playable on the PC and latest generation of game consoles. A version for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was cancelled at the last minute. However, the game does little to justify that exclusivity on more powerful consoles.
At most, it looks like a slightly nicer PlayStation 4 game, but runs at a frame rate of thirty frames per second despite that. That’s perfectly playable, but not the next-generation experience that the creators promise.
Bayonetta 3
- Platforms: Nintendo Switch
- Rating: 5 stars
There was no less than eight years between the second and thirdBayonetta games. The series was created by Japan’s PlatinumGames, helmed by Hideki Kamiya, who previously had a hand in major game series such asResident EvilandDevil May Cry.
You play again as the witch Bayonetta, who uses pistols at her feet to perform weird, acrobatic antics to fight her enemies. That fighting is again extremely well put together. You have to string combo attacks together and dodge attacks.
If you do the latter in the nick of time, the game plays in slow motion and you can safely give extra hits. In this way, the game encourages you to take risks more often.
Bayonetta 3is grander and more varied than the previous parts. For example, the world is freer to explore and battles are more varied due to all kinds of extra transformations. The absurdist style of the original is still present:
Bayonetta is still an extremely sexualized character, but the creators seem to be aware of how exaggerated everything is. That makes her a persiflage of female game characters in the nineties.
Mario + Rabbids: Spark of Hope
- Platforms: Nintendo Switch
- Rating: 4 stars
The French Ubisoft was allowed to make anotherMario game. A lot of it is similar to the previous part, butSparks of Hopeis a slicker and smoother sequel. Read our full, standalone review of the game below.
A Plague Tale: Requiem
- Platforms:
- Rating: 4 stars
The sequelA Plague Talebuilds directly on its progress. Once again you play as Amicia, who travels through medieval France with her brother. It’s a cruel, lawless time when people kill each other for little, and Amicia does everything she can to protect her little brother.
That little brother is able to control rats by mysterious magic, causing the family to flee.
Medieval France has been worked out with detail, which is partly due to the French origins of the makers. The game doesn’t feel as slick as other narrative 3D games from larger studios, but manages to distinguish itself with its unique and well-told story.
