German Jürgen Grabowski has died

Former football player Jürgen Grabowski has died at the age of 77, his former club Eintracht Frankfurt reported Friday. With Germany, the attacker became European and world champion in the early 1970s.

Grabowski had a starting place in the World Cup final against the Dutch national team in 1974. He formed a vanguard with Bernd Hölzenbein and Gerd Müller, the legendary striker who died last year at the age of 75.

Grabowski was already part of the national selection at the 1966 World Cup. West Germany lost 4-2 to host country England in the final that year. In 1972 Grabowski won the European title with ‘Die Mannschaft’.

In his club career Grabowski only wore the Eintracht Frankfurt shirt. The 44-time international won the cup tournament with the German club twice (1974 and 1975) and the UEFA Cup in 1980.

Grabowski made a total of 555 appearances for Frankfurt, scoring 151 goals. In 44 international matches for the Germans, he was accurate five times.

“Jürgen was perhaps the most perfect Frankfurt player ever,” said Axel Hellmann on behalf of the board. “He gave the club a cross-border identity.”
