Gloria Estefan says she was sexually abused by a music teacher at the age of nine. The singer revealed that during Red Table Talk: The Estefans, an online talk show that airs on Facebook.

According to the singer, the man in question was even related to her. “He was in a position of power because my mother had enrolled me in his music school. He immediately told her how talented I was and that I needed special attention. She was happy with the fact that he focused so much on me at the time,” said the now 64-year-old Cuban-American.

The man also threatened Estefan by stating that he would “kill her mother” if the singer from the school clapped about the abuse. Yet Estefan, whose life story was shown in the Netherlands in the musical On Your Feet,eventually told her mother about the abuse.

Her mother immediately called the police, but they advised against allowing the case to continue because of the trauma Estefan might experience by testifying against the abuser. Still, this state of affairs did not sit well with the singer. “That’s the only thing I feel bad about, knowing that there must have been other victims.”
