Glucosamine is a natural substance in your body that builds cartilage, the connective tissue that supports movement and protects joints and bones. According to some, glucosamine helps against multiple sclerosis, arthritis and other joint problems.

Glucosamine is chemically an amino sugar: a sugar form with protein properties. It is found in all body tissues, but especially in cartilage and tendons. You cannot get glucosamine from food. The substance is therefore popular as a dietary supplement for people who want to protect their cartilage. Taking glucosamine supplements is said to restore the body's glucosamine supply and repair damaged cartilage. Glucosamine supplements usually contain:
  • Glucosamine sulfate
  • Glucosamine hydrochloride
  • N-acetyl-glucosamine

Glucosamine is often combined with chondroitin sulfate, a molecule that is naturally present in cartilage. Chondroitin gives cartilage elasticity and is said to counteract the destruction of cartilage by enzymes.

Benefits of glucosamine

Some claim that glucosamine can help with the following conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder
  • Autoimmune disease (multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes)

Glucosamine has been studied extensively, and while it may have positive effects in rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, temporomandibular joint disorder, and multiple sclerosis, more research is needed to confirm this. However, glucosamine does likely help with osteoarthritis. Taking glucosamine sulfate by mouth for at least four weeks may provide pain relief and improve knee osteoarthritis.

Glucosamine side effects

Glucosamine side effects are usually mild. You may experience some nausea, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.

People with certain health conditions should not take glucosamine supplements without consulting a doctor. These include people with asthma, diabetes, glaucoma, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take glucosamine, as its safety has not been sufficiently demonstrated.

Stop taking glucosamine at least two weeks before a scheduled surgery because it can affect the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels.
